Made of hand sourced and processed clay during an artist residency in Puebla, Mexico. Sourced from the base of La Malinche, a volcano looming over the city of Puebla. Comprised of soils and clays from neighboring Tlaxcala as well.
Each stripe of clay was pressed on to a petate, or woven palm leaf mat, from El Salvador. Petates have played an integral part of both life and death in this region of the world.
The petate is a refelction of the relationships the civilizations of Meso America have had with the life giving, yet destructive, volcanoes they are dominated by.
Measures 6.5” long.
